Food as Art: Introducing Laksmi W.

If you've been coming here a while (who am I kidding...if you've ever been here before), you've seen me get pretty excited about food. But to be perfectly straight with you, I'm more excited about this post than I've been about any in quite some time. And the real kicker? There's not a single recipe to be found...just beautiful, soulful captures of real food from a dear friend of mine who is as wise as she is generous, and as beautiful within as without. I think you'll soon agree with me that this beauty and vitality radiates through her work as well. It's my great honor to introduce to you, Laksmi, and to share with you some of my favorites from her collection. Please find the rest on her Flickr photostream. Thank you, dear, for your friendship and guidance ever since we first "met" and for permitting me to reprint your work here. As for my readers, I do so hope you enjoy these as much as I have. And as many times as I've seen these photos, they still take my breath away so I'll be enjoying them along with you!

  1. Food is art, we eat with out eyes first, then nose, or vice versa? I'm starting to put all those collections to good use (props, vessels), I'm having trouble finding a contraptment (sp)? to hang my backgrounds though.. so I don't have to iron or steam them each time... if you have some ideas, let me know okay = )

  11. First photo has an interesting contrast - fresh bread (I think) and antique furniture, old and new in harmony.

  14. I love her use of wood surfaces and rough weave linen to create the 'palette' for the food colors ... she has an eye, that's for sure! I def prefer the 'dark ground' to the 'bright white light ground' that she uses with the blueberry slurpies/smoothies. Anyone else?

Susan - I really love both styles, but yes I have a soft spot for darker settings if you couldn't tell from my blog ;p. Thanks for your input!

  21. These are gorgeous and yes, food is most certainly art! I mean, isn't that a huge part of being a food blogger? Figuring out how to make your food LOOK as beautiful as possible? Love these!

  22. You know it's funny, Michelle, I never thought of myself as being particularly influenced by Laksmi, but it's true there's a group of us photographer friends on Flickr who admired and critiqued each others' work and learned at the same time. I suppose I was probably influenced unconsciously then. But honestly you don't understand how great of a compliment I take it that you think my work has any similarity to hers. THANK YOU =D!
